Name: José Miguel Díaz Escrich Position: Commodore of Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba Place of birth: Santiago de Cuba Date of Birth: December 21st, 1946 Since he was very young he felt devotion for the sea. In 1965 he entered Mariel Navy Academy, in the province of Pinar del Rio, Cuba; he graduated in 1969, as Deck Officer. Between 1969 and 1972 he works as 2nd Commander and Commander of a patrol vessel, during this time he also teaches at the Navy Academy. Between 1978 and 1981 he studied at the Russian Superior Navy Academy, obtaining the title of Master in Art and Naval Sciences. Back to Cuba, he performs different functions in the Navy Staff. He served as Legal Advisor and personal assistant to the head of this armed body. From 1987 to 1991 he taught at the Higher Academy of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Cuba, retiring in mid-1991 with the rank of Frigate Captain, beginning to work as an Advisor for nautical tourism. In May of 1992, he founded the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba, where he serves as Commodore of that non-governmental civil society until the present. Currently, Comodoro Escrich is an Honorary Member of several yacht clubs and institutions of the international nautical community. During the 25 years at the head of the HIYC of Cuba, Commodore Escrich has been a tireless promoter of recreational boating in his country, for which he has organized dozens of nautical events such as sailing and motor racing, fishing tournaments, conferences , seminars, workshops, etc. In these 25 years, he has also been invited to participate in events and to visit yacht clubs and nautical associations in more than 20 countries, being recognized as the Ambassador of the Nautical of Cuba. He has been decorated by several nautical institutions of many countries.
